A festive and easy dessert centerpiece perfect for game day. Chocolate cupcakes are arranged to form a football field, frosted with green turf, and decorated with yard lines and chocolate footballs. It’s a crowd-pleaser that looks impressive but is simple to assemble.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus required oil, eggs, water)
  • 2 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4-6 tbsp heavy cream or milk
  • Green gel food coloring
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp coconut oil or shortening
  • 12 store-bought chocolate football candies OR 1 cup no-bake cookie butter or cake pop dough for homemade footballs
  • White frosting or melted white chocolate for laces

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare chocolate cake mix according to package directions. Line two 12-cup muffin tins with paper liners. Divide batter evenly and bake as directed. Let cupcakes cool completely on a wire rack.
  2. Make the frosting: In a large bowl, beat softened butter with an electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating on low speed. Add vanilla and 4 tbsp of heavy cream. Beat on medium-high until light and fluffy, adding more cream if needed for spreadable consistency.
  3. Tint the turf: Transfer about 3/4 of the frosting to a separate bowl. Using green gel food coloring, tint the frosting a vibrant grass green. Stir until color is fully incorporated.
  4. Assemble the field: On a large board or platter, arrange the 24 cooled cupcakes tightly together in a 4×6 rectangle to form your football field.
  5. Frost the turf: Use an offset spatula or butter knife to spread the green frosting over the entire top of the cupcake array, covering the seams and creating a swirled, grassy texture.
  6. Pipe yard lines: Fit a piping bag with a small round tip (or use a zip-top bag with a corner snipped) and fill with the remaining white frosting. Pipe straight lines across the width of the field at regular intervals to create yard lines.
  7. Prepare footballs: If using store-bought candies, set aside. For homemade, shape cookie butter or cake pop dough into small ovals. Melt chocolate chips with coconut oil in 30-second microwave bursts, stirring until smooth. Dip each oval to coat, place on parchment paper, and let set. Use white frosting or melted white chocolate to pipe laces on each.
  8. Decorate: Scatter the chocolate football candies across the frosted field. Chill the entire cake for at least 30 minutes to set before serving.

Notes

Cupcakes can be baked and frozen up to a month ahead. Thaw overnight before frosting. For a quicker version, use pre-made frosting tinted green. Gel food coloring prevents frosting from becoming runny. Leftovers keep covered in the fridge for 3-4 days.
