This recipe transforms simple ingredients into incredibly tender, saucy chicken with minimal hands-on time. It’s the ultimate set-it-and-forget-it family dinner, perfect for serving on buns, over rice, or in tacos. The slow cooker does all the work, filling your home with the aroma of a summer cookout.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Place the chicken in the slow cooker insert. If using large breasts, cut them in half for even cooking.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the BBQ sauce, chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt.
  3. Pour the sauce mixture evenly over the chicken in the slow cooker. Gently stir to coat the chicken.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for 4 hours or on HIGH for 2 hours, until the chicken shreds easily with a fork.
  5. Use two forks to shred the chicken directly in the slow cooker. Stir well to combine with the sauce.
  6. Let the shredded chicken sit in the sauce for 10 minutes before serving to absorb more flavor.

Notes

For a thicker sauce, after shredding, cook uncovered on HIGH for 15-30 minutes. Chicken thighs are more forgiving and stay extra juicy. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
