Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Chocolate Cookie Dough:
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • For the Peanut Butter Swirl:
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter (not natural style)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Make the chocolate dough: Whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. In a large bowl, cream softened butter with both sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually mix in dry ingredients until just combined. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the peanut butter swirl: In a small bowl, stir peanut butter, powdered sugar, and 1 tbsp flour until smooth and slightly stiff.
  3. Combine and chill: Drop spoonfuls of peanut butter mixture onto the chocolate dough. Gently fold and swirl together until marbled. Cover and chill dough in refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  5. Scoop and bake: Portion chilled dough into 1.5-tablespoon balls. Place 2 inches apart on baking sheets. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are set but centers look soft.
  6. Cool and enjoy: Let cookies cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Do not skip the 30-minute chill time, as it prevents excessive spreading. Use standard creamy peanut butter for best swirl results. Cookies will look underdone when removed from oven but will set as they cool. Dough balls can be frozen for baking later.
