A single-serving, warm, and fudgy chocolate cake made in minutes in the microwave. This easy recipe uses pantry staples for a quick and satisfying dessert fix with minimal cleanup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tiny pinch salt
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil (like vegetable or avocado)
  • ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a 12-ounce microwave-safe mug, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt with a fork until no lumps remain.
  2. Add the milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the mug. Stir with the fork until a smooth, thick batter forms.
  3. Fold in the chocolate chips, if using, pressing a few into the top of the batter.
  4. Microwave on high for 60 to 70 seconds. Start checking at 60 seconds; the top should look set but the center slightly moist.
  5. Let the mug cake cool for 1 minute before enjoying directly from the mug with a spoon.

Notes

Do not overcook, as it can make the cake tough. For a gluten-free version, use a 1:1 gluten-free baking blend. For dairy-free, use plant-based milk and dairy-free chocolate chips. Microwave power varies, so adjust time as needed.
