Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ziti pasta
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (24-ounce) jar marinara sauce
  • 1 (15-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 15 ounces whole milk ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook ziti to al dente, drain, and set aside.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and onion. Cook until meat is browned and onion is soft, about 7-8 minutes. Add garlic and cook 1 minute more. Drain excess grease.
  3. Add marinara sauce, crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes to the skillet. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. In a medium bowl, mix ricotta cheese, egg, parsley, 1 cup mozzarella, and ½ cup Parmesan until combined.
  5. In a large pot or bowl, combine the drained pasta and the meat sauce.
  6. Spread half the saucy pasta in a 9×13 inch baking dish. Spread the ricotta mixture evenly over the top. Add the remaining pasta mixture. Sprinkle with remaining 3 cups mozzarella and ½ cup Parmesan.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake 15-20 minutes more until cheese is bubbly and golden.
  8. Let the baked ziti rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, cook pasta al dente and let the dish rest before serving. This recipe is highly adaptable: use ground turkey, Italian sausage, or go vegetarian. It freezes well for make-ahead meals.
