This stunning, no-cook board is the perfect festive centerpiece for any patriotic gathering. It’s an easy, make-ahead appetizer that uses simple red, white, and blue ingredients to create an edible flag. Fun to assemble and even more fun to share, it’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

  • For the Red Stripes: cherry tomatoes, strawberries, raspberries, red bell pepper strips, pepperoni slices, salami, soppressata, red grapes
  • For the White Stripes: mozzarella pearls or balls, white cheddar cheese cubes, goat cheese log, sliced provolone, baby potatoes, blanched almonds, plain crackers or breadsticks
  • For the Blue Star Field: blueberries, blackberries, blue corn tortilla chips, a wedge of blue cheese (like Gorgonzola)
  • For the Foundation & Fillers: assorted crackers, sliced baguette, mixed nuts (like marcona almonds or pecans)
  • For Garnish: fresh rosemary, parsley, or basil
  • Optional Dips: hummus, ranch dressing, or honey for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Map your canvas. Place a large board or platter on a clean surface. Mentally divide it into two sections: a rectangle in the top left corner for the blue star field and horizontal stripes across the rest.
  2. Create the star field. In the top left rectangle, arrange the blue components tightly together. Create a dense cluster of blueberries as a base, then tuck in the blue cheese wedge and a few blue corn chips.
  3. Lay the stripes. Work in horizontal rows across the rest of the board. Start with a red stripe (a row of cherry tomatoes or folded salami), then a white stripe (mozzarella pearls or crackers), then another red stripe, and so on. Aim for 7-13 stripes total.
  4. Fill and flourish. Once the flag structure is laid, fill any large gaps with foundation items. Scatter crackers, fill spaces with nuts, and tuck in fresh herbs for a greenery effect.
  5. Add final touches. Place small bowls of optional dips on the board. Drizzle honey over a log of goat cheese if desired. Step back and admire your edible flag.

Notes

Assemble the dry components (meats, cheeses, crackers, nuts) up to 24 hours ahead; cover and refrigerate. Add berries, herbs, and dips just before serving. If berries are rolling, create a bed with cheese cubes or crackers first. The board is highly adaptable; use what you have or prefer.
