Can Dogs Eat Beef Jerky? Discover What You Need to Know Today

Beef jerky dog treats healthy homemade snacks for your pup

Wondering if dogs can eat beef jerky? This homemade jerky recipe skips all the harmful additives and delivers a healthy, protein-rich snack your pup will love. Made from lean beef with no salt, spices, or preservatives, it’s vet-approved and Labrador-tested!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 pounds lean beef (top round, eye of round, or flank steak)
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (for natural preservation)
  • Optional equipment: Food-grade silica packet for moisture control

Instructions

  1. Choose the Meat: Select lean cuts like eye of round or flank steak. Trim all visible fat to reduce risk of digestive issues.
  2. Slice: Cut meat into thin strips (1/8 to 1/4 inch thick), against the grain for easier chewing.
  3. Skip Seasonings: Do NOT add salt, spices, garlic, onion, or marinades—these can be toxic to dogs.
  4. Dehydrate: Place slices in a dehydrator at 145°F–155°F for 4–6 hours, or bake in your oven on its lowest setting with the door cracked open until dry but still flexible.
  5. Cool & Store: Let jerky cool fully. Store in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or freeze for up to 3 months.

Notes

Turkey or chicken breast can be used instead of beef for a lower-fat option. Always supervise your dog when introducing new treats. Jerky should be a supplement, not a meal replacement. Portion appropriately based on your dog’s size.
